Golden Beach and the Trinculo Ship Wreck

Updated: Oct 24, 2018

Australia is home to some pretty spectacular beaches, with blue waters and golden sands. So its not surprising that one of its beaches would be called Golden Beach. Situated along the 90 Mile Beach in Gippsland, just a short drive to Seaspray and Loch Sport. Golden beach is home to not only an abundance of wildlife, but also home to the Trinculo ship wreck.

Golden Beach Australia

On the 30th of May 1879, The Trinculo Ship was being sailed to Melbourne, when it was struck by extreme gale force winds and although the event ended badly for the ship, the crew survived thanks to one crew member called Thomas Lefevre. Thomas managed to swim a line to shore through rough seas, and all members of the ship were able to make it ashore. Thomas received a Silver Medal from the humane society for his brave efforts.

Now in 2018, there are small pieces left of the once 320 tone, 3 mast Trinculo ship, but it still remains popular amongst tourists and locals alike. With many local photographers capturing stunning sunsets above its remains for their portfolios.

Finding the car park is easy enough, with many signs pointing the way from the main road in Golden Beach. The Trinculo is a short walk/hike from the roadside car park, but be sure to recall your steps, as it can be tricky heading back from the beach. We certainly got lost. But it does add to the adventure. The beach is dog friendly, but be careful of ticks in the surrounding bushland. Unfortunately there aren't any disability/wheelchair friendly tracks down to the Trinculo at this stage. The climb down and up the sandy tracks can be a challenge for some. Take your time, and stop along the way to enjoy the beautiful view.
